Configuring the GXT NAS 2 Port USB Dongle Print Server on Windows 7

Rob — November 26, 2010 - 23:59

I purchased a GXT 2-Ports NAS USB Dongle model number NAS-R104A from future shop about a week ago hoping to allow network printing to my USB printer with little configuration.  But, much to my surprise, I could not get the printer to print.

GXT 2-Ports NAS Dongle lrgBut after much time and determination, I got the print server to work on my Windows 7!  What the manual fails to mention is that LPR Print Monitor has to be installed for LPR printing to UNIX to work.  The NAS device runs on Linux, so this must be installed.  The instructions on the manual look like it was meant to be installed on Windows XP which may already have LPR Print Monitor installed by default.  Windows 7 does not have LPR Print Monitor installed.  This is how to get it installed on Windows 7:

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel then choose Programs
  2. Then click "Turn Windows features on or off"
  3. Once the window is ready, expand Print and Document Settings
  4. Put a check next to LPR Port Monitor
  5. Now add the printer again (or reconfigure the port) as a local printer using Standard TCP/IP port - as described in the manual.
Viola!

One post I found is worth noting and keeping record (spelling is as is):

After google around, with my surprise this NAS dongle is very popular and has lot potential, it power by RDC 3282 32bit RISC Core 150MHz, 1MB ROM, 16MB RAM, support Samba, FTP, DHCP, Printer Server, BitTorrent, UPnP-AV.  This particular box is manufacture by MRT communication, unfortunately MRT stop providing Firmware update on their web site.  After a bit searching I found a numerous boxes using the same processor and firmware. I upgrade my box firmware from 1.20b to 1.59b successfully. With the lastest firmware, it is more stable, data transfer rate increase significantly, and added some extra feature such hard drive sleep etc...  For anyone that interest in this box or need to update: search for the following model: Addonic NAS2XU2, Wanser-R, FET-RJ305S, Patriot Gearbox (Black), IcyBox Nas903 (I got the lastest from firmware 1.59b from this German site).  To update the firmware, you need a little bit of tweating before the box accept firmware other MRT release firmware. Upgrade the firmware will automatically VOID you warranty.
